mug cozy tutorial

this year for christmas im trying to make all of the gifts for the adults and their kids in our family.  meaning both of my bothers, their wives and kids, and grandparents.  we don't really have a lot of money to spend on everyone else but i still want to give them something nice. 

here's a tutorial for one of the items that im making everyone (except for the two littlest kids)  it's a mug cozy i saw this on thumbleanna  she didn't really give a tutorial on how it all goes together, so i decided to make one myself.  i hope you enjoy my spin on it, check out thimbleanna she has LOTS of great things on her blog to make! :)

 first start off with a 9.5 inch long and 3 inch wide piece of fabric

i made mine this width so i wouldn't be getting a mouth full of fabric each time i would sip from the cup.  feel free to customize it to your measurement of your favorite mug. 

cut a backing and batting and make your quilting sandwich and quilt.

 cut 5 inchs of the elastic fold it in half and place on one side of the 3 inch edge and pin.  stich these to the edge securely.

 add our binding over the elastic, and fold over the elastic and stitch over so they stick out and will be easy to grab when putting it on your mug.   continue binding the rest.

 add buttons to the opposite side and i noticed on thimbleanna's mug cozy she added hers to the top and bottom.  while i added mine closer to the center.  im not sure it makes a difference.  but i liked them closer. lol

now attach to your mug and enjoy! :) 

this is a mug cozy that i made for my older brother.  i made his out if some vintage wool, from a coat and linen with vintage metal buttons.  im pairing each with a matching mug rug to put in their stockings :)  merry christmas!

birthday card

in my family there are a lot of birthdays crammed into the next three months, not including all the other fall and winter activities that we normally do.  so ive made a birhtday card for my one of sister in laws. and here it is.

she has a little schnauzer, so i tried to color little wilma like that she's sooo cute! :)  i used a spellbinders labels die to cut the flourish edge on the bottom.

for a child challenge

this week, the challenge at inky impressions is "for a child". i have two daughters and i love to use them for inspiration.  when i was picking out an image to make this card, i asked my 6 y/o daughter which one she liked the best, and she said "i like the fairy, mommy."  (awe!)  so of course i had to use it :)  here's what i came up with i hope you like it :)

 i used k & company paper  designed by brenda walton, as well as the little angel tag that i also k & company from an ephemera pack. 

 here's the stick pink that i made, i wanted to hand a little charm on it, these charms are available at inky impressions store, and the really are fun :) i love the way it looks on this little card.  the lace and seam binding i got from ribbon girl.com

 here's a close up of the little clothes pin fairy, i colored her useing my copic markers.

here's the other corner that i added some cherry blossom, from i am roses and a resin heart from ribbon girl.

new release stamps from inky impressions

 it's a toolbox, that holds muffins (since honestly i dont really know what goes in a toolbox lol that's why i put muffins in mine :)

 here's a close up of the little mr. fix-it!  he's so cute, and was my total inspiration for this project! :) 


ok so here's how you make the toolbox,  sorry for the quality of pictures they were taken at my craft desk, and not in full florida sunlight. :)

i always try to use recycled materials for my projects and i dont really have measurements for most of the shapes , but it's pretty easy to figure out and make any size you want.  for this project you need:

2- cereal box sides, cut in half top to bottom these will be the sides
2- cereal box sides scored 1/2 inch on one side
2- popcorn box sides (the 6 bag box- it's half of a cereal box side so you could just use another cereal box and cut in half)
1- foil tube.  i thought about using a paper towel one but it doesn't look proportional.

ok so like i said score one side of the long and skinny cereal box sides, do this on each piece.  i fold all of the printed sides in because i plan on covering the inside with paper and the print is harder to paint over than the chipboard side.

measure the bottom against the long side and fold up the ends, do this to each side and piece.

make a little notch where you will fold around the to make a corner, and glue the scored 1/2 inch edge to the bottom, and fold and glue the edges around.  do this to each long skinny piece.

when you're done this is what you will get.

flip it over and glue the extra popcorn bottom to the bottom to secure in the glued edges and make the box really sturdy.

this is what you'll get. looks nice, huh? :)

next, on one of the cereal box pieces draw a curve on one side that you like and that looks "toolboxy".  cut it out and flip it over to the other side so they will be symmetrical.
 

 cut it out. and place the foil tube on the center of this piece.

 this is what you will get. this will be your template for the other 3.

glue the long sides with the hole in it one on either side of the tabs that you wrapped around the short end.  do this on each side, then lastly tread the handle through and cut it down to size.

as you can see i already started lining this with patterned paper.  thee last thing that i did what to paint the outside with a burnt umber base and layer crackle, the top it with a beigey brown.  made it look just like real wood.  i also put buttons on the foil tube ends it looks really cute and country that way. :)

by doubling up on the cardboard you can easy feel comfotable giving this project to a kid to play with, it's super sturdy and practically free :)

beautiful you, tilda's puppy

i haven't really made a card since i came back from vacation, and now school has started and ive got a bit of free time on my hands, and some new stamps :)  i got the elegant roses and the puppy wilma with a rose both from the raising the ceiling collection, they're my new two favorites! :) this is the card i created with those stamps.

i love this puppy!  i masked the puppy and added the roses behind him, i love the way it looks.  im probably going to have to do 90  million more! :) i used craft card to make the way pretty swirly heart that's holding the puppy image. 

here's a close up of little wilma. i wanted to add a tilda but she just wasnt proportional. any ideas to get around this?

these are the corner close ups.  i addedd some glitter hearts that i got at micheals after valentines, flatback coffee colored bling, pink flatback pearls, and a laser cut lace heart mrs gossman's sticker .

poodle puppy bento

hello! another busy day.  ive got a new bento to share with you.  i usually ask my daughter for ideas of what she would like to see in her bento, and today she asked for a little puppy.  so, that's what she got :)

he turned out so cute! :)  i love making bentos.  and im glad that the new school year is finally here.  :)  im sure i'll fizzle out mid way through though. lol  thanks for stopping by!

totally tilda dt call

hello everyone! im a twin and i recently had a birthday.  so of course, i had to make a card for my twin brother.  here it is!  i hope you like it :)

i really love the way this one turned out!  my goal for the tilda and edwin stamp was to make it look like a photo in a picture frame.

you can tell a bit better here.  i used a sellbinders label to cut out the stamped image and then cut off where it embossed, and layered it on another dark brown spellbinders diecut of the same size to give the effect of it being matted in the picture frame.  at their house they have a bunch of those white swirly shabby chic kind of frames, so i used a some cereal box chip board and cut a larger die shape and embossed it and white washed it so the embossing would stick out and make it look like the frames they have. 

 here's a close up of the corner there's pearls swirls and flowers.

here's the inside of the card.  it's my brother and i on a river boat, proud as can be.  i used a websters pages to create the frame, and raised with puffy dots to go with the picture frame theme.

inky impressions design team

hey everyone!  i was asked to be apart of the inky impressions design team!  i'm so excited about this opportunity! :)  my term starts in september, and the new designers were given a digital stamp to make something with, and this is what i came up with! :)

ack! i just love this card! :)  it's so sweet!  for the card base i used a chipboard album base that i got from micheals, and the bottom is a scalloped circle card that i also got from micheals.   and i used a little slip of paper to make it into an easel card.

here's just the top.  for the background paper i used my minds eye, 6 x 6 dwell collection.  it's a very fun girly bubble-gummy kind of theme.

here is the bottom half.  the yellow base is from the same paper collection.  the sentiment "believe" came from a k & company die cut pack from hobby lobby, i used puffy dots on the back of the sentiment to hold up the card.  the flowers are from i am roses, and the brown diecut is from martha stewart.

i colored the digital image with my tim holtz distress markers.  i have a problem coloring digital images with my copics since i have a laser printer that uses toner.  the toner tends to flake off, but if i print it on watercolor paper and watercolor it i dont have that problem. yay! :)  if you like this image you can get it at inky impressions, i hope you check them out! :)
